Duart Castle

The feel

Duart Castle offers an exceptional location to get married. The castle is steeped in history being seat of the Clan Maclan for over 600 years and is still the home of Sir Lachlan Maclean, Bt. 28th Chief of the Clan Maclean today. The castle stands proudly on a cliff overlooking the Sound of Mull, Duart enjoys one of the most spectacular positions on the west coast of Scotland.

WEDDING LOCATIONS AT THE CASTLE

We have four places where you can have your wedding ceremony at Duart:
• Outside by the single cannon looking down the Sound of Mull
• In the Banqueting Hall
• In the Sea Room in the Castle
• The Drawing Room

BANQUETING HALL

The Banqueting Hall or Great Hall is the largest room in the Castle, accessed by the Sea Room. This room lends itself well to larger weddings and can be set up with seating according to the number of guests attending, to a max of 80, with the remaining guests being required to stand.

THE SEA ROOM

The Sea Room is the access room to the Great Hall. Large windows accommodate the south facing aspect of this room giving the most magnificent views from within the Castle looking down the Sound of Mull and Loch Linnhe.
This room is also licensed for weddings and suits smaller wedding parties up to a maximum of 20 people.

THE DRAWING ROOM

This room is the Chief’s private Drawing Room which is not open to the public and is occasionally available. It is a beautiful room, tastefully decorated located off the Banqueting Hall. It is a much smaller, and a more intimate room lending itself to smaller wedding parties to a maximum of 20 people.

OUTSIDE THE CASTLE

The outdoor wedding venue is by the single cannon, facing up the Sound of Mull. This is truly an amazing location. The Registrar will require you to make a provisional booking for an indoor venue in case of bad weather.

FAQs

Is there any accommodation at the Castle?
No. We don’t offer accommodation but we can offer two bedrooms to get changed and prepared for the wedding.
What catering facilities do you offer?
We do not offer a full wedding reception. In principle we offer drinks and canapes following the wedding ceremony.
What makes Duart different?
We can offer your wedding party a private guided tour of the castle prior to your wedding so that everyone fully experiences their visit to the castle at the time of the wedding. There is then time for refreshments while the wedding party get ready at the castle.
Opening information
The castle opens on the 1st April and closes on the 18th October. During April and October the Castle is open on restricted hours which are 11am to 4pm, which allows weddings to take place in the morning or from 4.30pm. May to September, the Castle is open from 10.30am to 5.00pm so the ceremony can take place before or after the Castle is open to the public. Most of our weddings during these months take place at 5.30pm. We are sometimes able to offer the Chief’s own private Drawing Room as a backup for an outdoor wedding or as a wedding venue. As the drawing room is not open to the public we are not restricted to the Castle opening times.
