Northumberland was romantic long before all those Catherine Cookson flat cap and gingham novels, guilty literary pleasures still today. It couldn’t help but be so, with its beaches pounded by powerful seas, and brooding slate skies above the mysterious hills. It’s a land of legend and conflict, adding to the atmosphere, fought over by the English and Scots since time immemorial, the legacy of those clashes the landscape dotted with ancient castles. When more peaceful times arrived great houses superseded fortresses, and there was more traffic for the old inns and their descendents the fine hotels here.
