There is so much more to Staffordshire than the Potteries, wonderful though that aspect of its heritage may be. The county has a sizeable foothold in the Peak District, its moorlands, the fascinating Black Country, Needwood Forest and the Churnet Valley. And in terms of its settlements there is equal variety, with lovely hill-country towns like Leek, Johnson’s picturesque home of Lichfield, and Arnold Bennett’s characterful Five Towns (actually six) that make up Stoke on Trent.
