Alston has had a claim-to-fame for many years as the highest market town in England (though intriguingly it once belonged to Scotland’s kings), but more recently it hit the headlines with a desperate search by lonely men in search of apparently all too rare single women – so grooms keep an eye open for competition until the licence is signed!
