Bolsover is a town with the capacity to surprise. Its raison d’ętre for many years may have been mining, but look beyond the old miners’ cottages and you find some older mementoes of its past, not least the fine Bolsover Castle – we dare you to look at the main part of the Jacobean building and not think of wedding cake! Its other great site, the caves at Creswell Crags, goes back far further, to prehistoric days, though one of those caves is associated with that fine figure of English romantic folklore Robin Hood.
