Carlisle is the Border City, a place with a wealth of history and no little romance in its eventful past. No less a figure than Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here for a time; Bonnie Prince Charlie captured the place; and the Reivers made frequent unwelcome visits to the district. That past is visible in legacies like its fine cathedral and Guildhall, and The Lanes, the characterful little snickelways now holding some intriguing shopping. The city has a good reputation on the culinary front too, not least because of the preponderance of micro-breweries in the area, something to think about when planning your toasts perhaps?
