Inextricably linked with its most famous son, the romantic-realist writer Thomas Hardy, Dorchester was the barely veiled setting for The Mayor of Casterbridge and much of Tess of the d’Urbervilles, his two best-known works. To this day the settlement is a bustling and busy market town, and as your guests may be pleased to know, a place where the beer enjoys a certain renown in spite of the vicissitudes of brewing history over recent decades. The centre has been more settled, as might be expected of its solid Portland stone structures.
