Perched high above the river, with a view across that water made famous by Turner, Kirkby Lonsdale is a working town at the centre of the local farming industry as you might guess from the rolling green fields and sheep-covered hills all around, but a truly lovely place to visit too, a walk round the town revealing one highlight after another – the fine old church, more food shops than are good for your figure, little back-streets that reveal solid stone cottages from another quieter era, though it has known a few boisterous ones too with the Romans and Vikings both passing this way.
