The Royal Burgh of Lauder may be near enough to Edinburgh to be considered commuter country these days, but it is a world apart in terms of size and location. Lauder, with fewer than 2000 inhabitants, sits in the valley of the Leader Water at the edge of the Southern Uplands and Lammermuir Hills. This is countryside that provided John Buchan with so much material for his historic romances, and no wonder given the rich legacy of Scotland’s past seen in the town and the surrounds: the old Tollbooth; its Stuart church; the magnificent castle here; and a mobile reminder in the Common Riding in June.
