Thanks eventually to a much-needed bypass the pleasant little town of Wadebridge returned two decades ago to its quieter self, much of the centre now pedestrianised. There is a certain irony in that, given that in medieval days the town gained its name from the bridge built across the Camel River to make access easier. That 14-arch bridge is one of the great sights in a decidedly pretty town, not short of whitewashed houses and shops, a fine place in which to begin your married life. The Camel Estuary here offers plenty of opportunity to get away from the urban environment, not that life is generally anything approaching hectic here.
