Whitehaven is a place with several histories. The days of its pits and plants are fading fast into memory, though some more scenic reminders of that trade remain, allowing other more romantic aspects of the place to return to the fore: the tale of John Paul Jones’s derring do, bringing the American War of Independence to British soil; the romantic story of its rum-soaked links with the Caribbean; and its days as a major port - the renovated port area a rather fine one and the marina something of an undiscovered gem; and its geometric Georgian lines, in both buildings and street plan.
