Woodstock is a town that would be dwarfed by many villages in this country, but its crowning glory, the palace built for the Duke of Marlborough by John Vanbrugh, would not blush beside the grandest buildings in the land. Designed as a national monument as much as a home, a fact that led to a bitter dispute between architect and Duchess, it is the largest non-royal home in Britain, Vanbrugh’s design enhanced by gardens created on an equally grand scale by Capability Brown.
