Proud Country House

The feel

“Everything was perfect – thank you we had just the sort of day we imagined!” – Ian & Marion

Steeped in history, Stanmer House is a stunningly restored Grade 1 country house nestled in unspoilt Grade 2 listed parkland and acres of peaceful Sussex woodland, farm land and countryside. Built in 1722 for the Pelham Family, who owned

it until 1947, and set in Stanmer Park – the City’s largest park – it’s the perfect venue for all seasons. Stanmer Park is the gateway to the South Downs National Park and is at the heart of the Living Coast UNESCO World Biosphere Region.

The Church at Stanmer dates back to the fourteenth century, and it has been a place of worship since the 8th century. The current building was completely rebuilt in 1838 by Henry, Sixth Early of Chichester. The knapped flint church is Grade 2 listed and has

a particularly special interior with original carvings and fittings. and it has been a place of worship since the 8th century. Although now declared ‘redundant’, under licence from the Diocese and with prior consent, the Church may be used wedding blessings.

The jewel in our crown; named after the man who built Stanmer House, Henry Pelham of Stanmer. This room – originally the dining room – with a screen of exquisitely detailed Corinthian columns, possess an elegance typical of sophisticated architects of the Palladian era. A plaster-work frieze is modelled with almost Baroque richness and depth of relief, with a ceiling of swirling Rococo scrolls in a lively and graceful French taste, due in part to the architect Nicholas Dubois being himself, of French origin.

Bright and airy, with beautiful views across the Grade 2 listed parkland, The Marlborough Room is situated on the first floor of the house. Ideal for more intimate ceremonies, for up to 60 guests, the adjacent Amelia room and Upper Lobby are perfect for drink receptions.

Stanmer House and Gardens provide the perfect, romantic backdrop to enhance the elegance of your day. Our inter-linking, restored formal rooms open out to the garden, with all the grandeur of an 18th Century listed building. Be it a boutique reception for 50 guests or a larger soiree for 300, Stanmer House will make your wedding special and memorable. Our Country Marquee set within the elegant grounds of the house comes complete with its own kitchen, bathrooms and private bar. With a backdrop of the formal gardens, this all-encompassing venue can accommodate up to 300 guests for

your wedding breakfast and more for an evening reception. With doors opening onto the gardens, make the most of warm summer evenings (or for Autumn and Winter weddings, the marquee is fully-heated).

With a strong emphasis on food, our team of in-house chefs have curated the perfect culinary journey from your Wedding Breakfast through to your evening reception. We use locally-sourced meat, fish and fresh produce from within a twenty mile radius of Sussex. Our head chef, James Mitchell, has created a simply cooked, beautifully-flavoured British seasonal menu that’s sure to impress.
